A Life of Triumph
Born on December 30, 1956, in Little Rock, Arkansas, Sheryl Lee Ralph grew up surrounded by music. Her father was a pianist and a singer, while her mother was a jazz singer. It's no surprise then that she began singing at the tender age of three, eventually training as an opera singer before transitioning to musical theater.
A Star in the Making
Ralph's big break came when she landed the role of Deena Jones in the 1981 Broadway production of "Dreamgirls." Her performance earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. This early success set the stage for what would be a long and illustrious career in Hollywood.
